John R. Evans was born in Caernarfon in 1931. Educated at Caernarfon Grammar School and the Welsh School of Architecture (W.S.A.) Cardiff. His initial interest in drawing was encouraged by Tudor O. Thomas, Art Master (known as Tots) and prior to commencing at the W.S.A. he completed his Higher School Certificate in Drawing and painting. After qualifying as an architect he set up in practice in Cardiff with T.Glyn Jones, elected A.R.I.B.A. in 1955 and F.R.I.B.A. in 1971.
In 2005 asked to produce a series of a dozen large paintings for a penthouse in Majorca. The completion of this work crystallised a positive attitude to continue with further work and develop his technique and style.
His favourite artists are Sir Kyffin Williams, Kurt Jackson, Graham Sutherland, William Selwyn and John Knapp Fisher. Their influence can be noted in some of his work. John R. Evans shares their strong connection and sense of belonging with mountains, coast and shore and with nature in its wildest areas. His work draws from his early childhood in Caernarfon and Anglesey and later time spent in the Pembrokeshire National Park.
