Janice James

Beautiful and highly collectible raku sculptures by the Welsh artist Janice James, who was brought up in an artistic environment; her father was a painter and sculptor. She has always been a 'maker' – clothes, handbags and jewellery – but in her early forties she discovered clay, the perfect medium in which to express herself. She gained a BA(Hons) Ceramics at Swansea Institute in 2002 and has since exhibited and sold her work in galleries, exhibitions and to private collectors.

Janice James's ceramic 'tribal heads' sculptures are a culmination of work combining form and surface pattern, exploring the art of body decoration still practised by global cultures. Each piece is hand built from Scarva Earthstone clay, biscuit fired to 1000°C and raku fired. Her influences range from classical sculpture, particularly the rich texture of ancient stone, to the simplicity of the work of Modigliani, Brancusi and the intricately decorated paintings of Gustav Klimt.
